The retractable roof of the Granite Club swimming pool provides swimmers with unique indoor/outdoor enjoyment of the facility. At the same time, the retracting roof posed several interesting lighting design challenges, namely how to provide a required minimum level of 200 lux for the entire space with the roof open. The design allowed for no lights over the pool, in order to eliminate reflections that might reduce visitors’ comfort and enjoyment of the space. The solution was to hang fixtures on the sides and angle them to cover low light areas where no fixtures could be hung. The poolside conversation area is enhanced with both indirect and direct lighting systems to provide the ambient lighting suitable for the space. A UPS system provides emergency lighting for the entire area.
