The headquarters of the Ontario Realty Corporation (ORC) required our design team to meet the client’s lighting needs while being innovative enough to reach new sustainability targets. The design met and exceeded ASHRAE energy standards by 15%, assisting in achieving the projects’ LEED goals. The primary lighting philosophy integrated artificial electric lighting with natural daylight to enhance comfort, productivity and energy efficiency. Indirect luminaries were chosen as the main light source for most areas of the office space, illuminating the ceiling and providing a soft, shadowless environment. Ceiling mounted daylight and occupancy sensors were used around the perimeter to control the dimming system. This allows natural light to provide both task and ambient lighting. Occupancy sensors were used throughout the office to reduce energy consumption. Compact fluorescent and metal halide downlights supplement the ambient lighting.
