This greenfield 740,000 ft² high rise research and educational facility enhances the overall campus of SickKids, which now totals more than 2,500,000 ft². SickKids is a landmark hospital and is renowned internationally as a world-class institution. The new facility has been designed to target LEED® Gold status, and consolidates the widespread research functions of SickKids Hospital into one cohesive unit.
The building features an automated lighting control system that manages lighting for all spaces – teaching, research, laboratories, offices and conference rooms. Metal-halide and fluorescent lighting are predominant, with some LED lighting. Lighting for the public spaces has been designed to highlight the community aspect of the spaces and to encourage interaction between researchers. The majority of the building’s spaces are laboratories, which are lit with direct and indirect lighting to mitigate shadowing and enhance workflow.
Winner, 2014 Illuminating Engineering Society of North America’s Illumination Design Award.
