This Learning Centre and Library space was designed for internet research, custom teaching sessions and to provide access to print resources, in response to the needs of patients and their families for reliable, relevant and valid health information. The luminaire family selected for the space was similar to the newly renovated adjacent corridor in order to create visual flow and comfort when transitioning from one area to the next.
Originally designed with compact fluorescents, an upgrade to LEDs proved to be the best choice for energy efficiency and ease of maintenance. Design challenges in the space included the existing ductwork in the ceiling which could not be moved, and which provided in some areas only 2” for luminaire height. LEDs were used to wash the walls with light and to produce the majority of the ambient luminance.
The existing windows were covered with acid-etched translucent glass to provide daylighting without glare; at night, LED downlights were recessed in a cove to produce the effect of daylight. All luminaires are controlled by dimmers.
